Gary Allan Learning Centres provide several dynamic summer school learning opportunities for eligible Grade 6, 7 and 8 students throughout the month of July.

Registration is NOW OPEN! Please look below for more information and how to register for:

  • Grade 6 Math and Literacy Camp

  • Grade 7/8 Math and Literacy Camp

  • Grade 7/8 English Language Learners Program

  • Grade 8 Reach Ahead Opportunity (earn Secondary School credit)

Grade 6 Math and Literacy Camp

These programs are designed for current Grade 6 HDSB students that do not consistently attain Level 3 on their report card. Students may enroll in both the Math and Literacy camps (one per session) or choose just one camp.

The Grade 6 Math Camp is a virtual learning program that focuses on building students’ confidence and engagement while exploring key mathematical concepts. Over the 8 days, this Camp will offer a variety of problems, activities and challenges that will deepen students’ mathematical understanding as well as support their development of a growth mindset.

The Grade 6 Literacy Camp is a virtual learning program for students who do not consistently achieve a level 3 on their report card. Over the 8 days, students will engage in activities that focus on reading and writing with the intention to deepen their understanding and strengthen key literacy skills to support them in grade 7.

Please Note:

  • Students are not able to reach ahead (e.g. if your child is currently in Grade 6, they cannot take the Grade 7 courses).

  • Grade 5 students are not eligible to take the Grade 6 Math Camp.

Dates:

Session 1: July 4-7, 2a022 & July 11-14, 2022

Session 2: July 18-21, 2022 & July 25-28, 2022

Time: 9:00 am – 11:00 am.

Classes will take place using Google Meets and Classroom in a synchronous virtual learning environment.

Attendance Policy:

Daily participation is required. Participation in any summer school program is essential in order to benefit from the program being offered.

Grade 7/8 Math and Literacy Camp

Grade 7 and 8 LITERACY: The combined Grade 7 and 8 Literacy Program is a virtual learning program for students who do not consistently achieve a level 3 on their report card. Over the 8 days, students will engage in activities that focus on reading and writing with the intention to deepen their understanding and strengthen key literacy skills to support them in grade 8 or 9.

Grade 7 and 8 MATH: The combined Grade 7 and 8 Math Program is a virtual learning program for students who do not consistently achieve a level 3 on their report card. Over the 8 days, students will engage in a series of problems and activities intended to deepen their understanding of fractions and algebra while consolidating key concepts to support them in grade 8 or 9.

  • Students are not able to reach ahead (e.g. if your child is currently in Grade 6, they can not take the Grade 7 courses).

Grade 7/8 English Language Learners Camp Program

Grade 7 and 8 combined MATH and LITERACY for English Language Learners: This virtual learning program is for English Language Learners of all STEP levels, regardless if they currently have ESL support in school. Over the 8 days, students will focus on deepening their understanding of key mathematical and literacy concepts in an environment that supports language acquisition and use.

Session One: July 4-7 2022 & July 11-14, 2022

Session Two: July 18-21, 2022 & July 25-28, 2022.

Time:

9:00 am to 11:00 am

Grade 8 Reach Ahead Opportunity

Grade 8 students currently enrolled in HDSB, who consistently achieve Level 3 or higher, can earn a high school credit by successfully completing one of the following summer school courses. Each course will be four weeks and offered in-person. Participation in these courses will help students transition into a high school environment, and may result in a spare in their senior year of high school.

Please Note: Grade 8 students are not eligible to enroll into any other High School Credit courses, or literacy/ math programs.

NAC1O – Exploring Canada’s Indigenous Cultures: Grade 9 students will learn to identity Indigenous art forms and describe relationships between art form and Indigenous traditions, philosophy and culture (High School Credit Granting Course).

or

GLD2O – Exploring My Future: Grade 10 (Open) students will investigate occupations of interest and develop an understanding of work through a variety of experiences (High School Credit Granting Course).

Note: This courses does not grant you the compulsory grade 10 Careers credit.

Courses will run from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm at all locations excluding Georgetown H.S. which will run 8:30 am to 2:00 pm).

Attendance Policy:

Students may miss a maximum of 2 days in a full credit course. Approved absences will be at the discretion of Summer School Supervising Administrator. Failure to do so will result in removal from the program.

  • Non-HDSB Students joining an HDSB high school in September 2022 and do not have access to myBlueprint, please register here.

Parents/guardians will receive confirmation of registration by June 30, 2022 via SchoolMessenger email.

International and Indigenous Languages Program

The International and Indigenous Languages Elementary Program is a non-credit program that is open to all Halton elementary school-age children (JK-8) regardless of their cultural or ethnic background.

This program provides Halton students with the opportunity to develop their language skills, deepen their cultural awareness, foster pride in their heritage and strengthen their self-esteem. In addition to building language skills, research demonstrates that students who study languages in addition to English and French perform better in other school subjects.

Registration:

Registration for IILE Summer 2022 will close on June 15, 2022 at 4:00 pm.
